South Midweek Walk 2018 - Amberley Circular

Join Justin and Matt for a circular walk along the South Downs Way. We head out over Houghton Bridge (a grade II listed structure) and walk along the banks of the Arun, over the wetlands, before climbing up the reasonable gradient along the side of Coombe Wood on Bury Hill (from 0 to 145m above sea level). We cross the A29 and walk along a parallel path (passing Mill Ball - a Bowl Barrow https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1008213 no longer visible). We then join the Monarch's Way, clipping Whiteways Plantation and head back down the slope. We pass High Down Hill Viewing point and then pop out of the tree cover to emerge by The George and Dragon, http://www.thegeorgeanddragonhoughton.co.uk with parts of it's building dating back to the 13th century. It claims to have hosted Charles II in 1651, fleeing his defeat at the Battle of Worcester. We will stop here for some food (not battles hopefully) and great views on their terrace (weather and space permitting). After a meal and a pint (or two) we head down a pretty lane to the river once more and walk along the bank back to Amberley Station where the walk concludes.
Note this walk closes at 12.30pm on the day of the walk. The attendance list is then locked.
Some of the views on this walk are my favourite in the area.
