West Kirby Wander

This easy 9 mile walk offers an opportunity to cross the sands from West Kirby to Hilbre Island, an island in the River Dee that is home to a variety of birdlife and is only accessible at low tide. After exploring the island, we'll head back towards West Kirby and stroll around the Marine Lake, heading for Caldy Hill. From Caldy Hill, there are magnificent views over the island and Dee Estuary and on top of it sits the 'Mariners Beacon', erected to assist sailors with their passage into port. Descending the hill, we'll follow the Wirral Way back to our start point at West Kirby station.
What to bring
Whilst boots aren't strictly necessary for this walk, please wear sturdy footwear that you don't mind getting mud and sand on! Given the unpredictable British weather, a rain jacket and suncream are both recommended. For further tips on what to wear/bring on a day walk, see the 'About Us > My First Event' section of the website.
Food & drink
Please bring a packed lunch which we'll eat on Hilbre Island, as well as enough fluids to keep you hydrated during the walk (minimum 1 litre recommended).
There'll be an optional pub stop at the end of the walk.
