As we head into the silly season, it's tempting to hang up your waterproof jacket and hibernate. But on this first day of Advent why not start eating, drinking and being merry with Outdoor Lads with a Sunday lunch after this short(ish) country walk in the Severn valley?

We start our circular route in the quaint little town of Upton, the smallest in Worcestershire. Flooding often cuts the population off from its immediate surroundings (and seemingly a little from time itself) though it remains very vibrant with multiple festivals as well as thriving independent shops, cafes and pubs.

The route hugs the banks of the River Severn for the first couple of miles; this stretch of land was actually feared to be a potential site for a Nazi invasion in WWII, leading to a little "landscaping" to prevent enemy aircraft from landing there. Now the floodplain is a peaceful nature reserve with beautiful views over to the Malvern Hills. Looping back on ourselves away from the river, we'll walk across the fields and through hamlets to head back to one of Upton's many cosy pubs for a hearty Sunday dinner and a drink.
