St. Sunday Crag

“Every walker who aspires to high places and looks up at the remote summit of St Sunday Crag will experience an urge to go forth and climb up to it, for it’s challenge is very strong. Its rewards are equally generous, and altogether this is a noble fell. “ – according to Wainwright!! And he’s not wrong, although it’s not too much of a challenge when approached from Grisedale Tarn!
We’ll start in Glenridding and wind our way past an idyllic hidden tarn to cross in to Grisedale, below the ridge of St. Sunday Crag, gradually climbing up alongside Grisedale beck to the tarn, before turning and heading up to traverse the main, broad, ridge of St. Sunday Crag. After taking in the short spur to Gavel Pike (giving great views over Ullswater) , we’ll return to the main ridge route and descend over “Birks”, (of which Wainwright is less eloquent!), and, time and energy permitting we’ll take in Arnison Crag to complete the trio of Wainwrights (for those who are counting!).
Although this is a ridge walk, it's not technical, although the ascent and descent are steep in places, and the distance (c.16Km/10miles) and ascent (c.900m) do make this a full "mountain day".
Don't waste that space! Summer walks generally have lots of new and existing members eager to #getoutmore so if your plans change please free up the space for someone else.
Is it dog friendly? Dogs are welcome but please note and abide by the Countryside Code. Please also remember not everyone loves dogs as much as you do so please be mindful of other members.

What to bring
This is a full mountain day - in the Lake District; so the weather should hold no surprises! You will need sturdy, waterproof walking boots (not trainers), with good walking socks to help prevent blisters. It may be summer but you may well need waterproofs (including trousers),
Warm, layered clothing (to suit changing body temperature as we climb steeply and rest) and some spare layers too, along with hat or Cap (to stay warm, or shaded in sun) and it might even be worth throwing a pair of gloves in your bag too! But let's be optimistic and remember the sun-cream too!
Rucksack, with waterproof bags/drybags to keep everything dry - including a waterproof bag for your phone.
Don't forget walking Poles - if you have them and prefer to use them; there are some steep sections of ascent and descent.
As well food and water, don't forget any personal medication you may need during the day.
If you're interested in map-reading & navigating: OS Explorer OL5 (1:25,000) or Landranger 90 (1:50,000) cover the full walk.
The walk leader will bring any emergency equipment required for the group, but you are welcome to bring any that you have, such as additional high energy food, a survival bag, a whistle, a medical kit, a torch and something to make fire (either storm proof matches or a firelighter
Food & drink
Please bring enough food; lunch and snacks, as well as water (ideally 2Litres) for a full day on the hill, as we won't be passing anywhere for buying food or drink once we start walking.
Refreshments available in Glenridding before and after the walk.
