Some steep short inclines to get to the top of the cliffs, mainly flat terrain on this 9 mile walk

Saltburn by the Sea is a lovely seaside town in Redcar and Cleveland, North Yorkshire, that was once an important Victorian bathing resort. It's home to the North East's only pleasure pier and  Saltburn Cliff Lift, one of the oldest working water-powered funiculars in Britain.

This 8 mile walk starts from Saltburn-by-the-Sea, where we will pick up the Cleveland way along the cliff tops to enjoy the stunning views from this wonderful coastline. Here we will come across 'The ring'  (also known as the Circle or Bracelet) which stands on its edge with 10 charms suspended from the top. Each charm is a three dimensional image representing a story of local folklore, culture or tradition.
We'll have Ocean on the left, Countryside on the right.

Dropping down from the cliff tops to Cattersty Sands, through Skinningrove (famous for capturing a merman, details below*), and climbing back up to the cliff tops taking us to Hummersea Point where we loop back to Saltburn.

Upon returning to Saltburn, there are facilities for tea, coffee, and delicious fish and chips on the seafront.

This walk is NOT suitable for dogs due to the narrow clifftop paths.

Car parking for the top station of Saltburn Cliff Tramway is free and is available on Marine Parade. Pay and display car parking is available for the bottom station of Saltburn Cliff Tramway at Pier / Promenade and Cat Nab car parks.

*The tale of the Skinnigrove merman is one of East Cleveland’s most popular folk tales. The story dates back to the late 1400s when it was said that a fish-like creature was caught in the nets of local fishermen. Unable to speak, its only means of communication was by means of a loud shriek! The “seaman” was kept in a house in the village for several weeks where the people of Skinningrove fed him. A rather fussy eater, the Merman would only eat the raw fish provided for him and earned a reputation as a bit of a lady’s man!
