Roaming the Ribble Valley

Come along for a 10 mile walk through the Ribble Valley, taking in the areas aound the villages of Sabden and Wiswell.
This is a 10 mile walk in the picturesque area of The Forest of Bowland area of outstanding natural beauty, just around the corner from Pendle Hill.
With some hills along the way, though nothing too difficult, all abilities are welcome, as are dogs but please be mindful that we will regularly see livestock in fields and that there will be some stiles to get over along the route too.
We begin the walk in Sabden, with toilets and local shops nearby if needed before setting off. Different parts of the walk will take us up the valley, over farmland, around Churn Clough reservoir, through woodlands, down in to Wiswell and then returning along the opposite side of the valley back to Sabden. With beautiful far reaching views along the way.
Sabden is a medium-to-large village in the scenic Ribble Valley, Lancashire. It lies in the Forest of Pendle section of the Forest of Bowland Area. The village is surrounded by farmland, moors and wooded hillsides, making it feel as though you could be a long way from anywhere built up, but is in fact only 20 minutes drive away from Burnley and about half an hours drive to Preston.
Wiswell (spoken "Wizel") is a small village and civil parish that lies at the foot of Wiswell Moor in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire. Thought to take it's name from Old Molly's Well, a local landmark know as Wise Women's Well (Wise Well). The village is home to the multi award winning (including #3 in the top 50 Gastropubs and AA awards) pub, the Freemason's Arms, where we may find time to stop for a drink.
We will have chance, should anyone wish, to enjoy a drink at the Freemason's Arms in Wiswell and finish the walk back in the centre of Sabden, where the local shop and a choice of two pubs, are a stones throw away for some optional refreshments before heading home.
Dogs are welcome to join us for this 10 mile walk, though there are a number of fields with livestock and some stiles along the route that might not be suitable for them to easily navigate alone.

COVID-19 – IMPORTANT, Please read the following before you sign up to this event:
- Anyone with COVID-19 symptoms, even if they are extremely mild, or who lives or is in a support bubble with someone showing symptoms, is asked not to attend. This is in line with the government’s coronavirus advice.
- You must also immediately self-isolate and not attend the event if you or someone in your household or support bubble shows coronavirus symptoms or tests positive. Read the NHS self-isolation guidance.

What to bring
Water: bring at least two litres
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Day rucksack: typically 20-30 litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
Boots: waterproof and breathable and designed for hiking, trainers are OK if the ground is dry and there’s little chance of rain
Gaiters: recommended for wet weather or boggy conditions
Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece)
Trousers: ideally no jeans as they become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and on warm days shorts are OK
Waterproof jacket: essential when hiking in all but the calmest of weather, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry
Gloves: Windproof, or better still, waterproof gloves are the best choice, bring a spare pair if expecting rain
Hat or cap: stay warm in winter and shaded in summer
Sunglasses: for any sunny day, even in winter
Sun cream: can be useful even on cloudy and winter days
Snacks: bring biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit for example and put them somewhere easy to get hold of
Lunch: bring a packed lunch and some snacks
Food & drink
Bring a packed lunch, something to keep hydrated (2ltrs of water is reccomended) and some snacks.
There is a local shop in the village, just round the corner from the car park, that will be open before the walk to purchase snacks, feel free to visit before joining us at the start point. There is also the Freemason's Arms in Wiswell (around the halfway point) and the White Hart pub (after the walk) that serve food and drink should you wish to purchase any refreshments during and/or after the event.
