Thinking about joining Outdoor lads and want to see what it's about? Or are you already a member and fancy a nice easy walk and a social pint on a school night?
Join me for a short canal walk starting from Kings Cross Station and finishing at Paddington Mainline Station, where, as standard, we’ll stop for a cheeky pint or two.
The Regent’s Canal is one of London’s best-kept secrets - a peaceful haven often hidden by the surrounding buildings.
Starting at Kings Cross Station we'll walk up to Central St Martins and join the Regents canal there. We'll then follow the canal passing the new Kings Cross developments and onto Camden Lock and the famous Camden stables. We'll continue on past London Zoo's aviary structure and the expensive Nash mansions, whose gardens descend in steep gradients down to the water. From there we'll pass the colourful collection of narrowboats before hitting Little Venice, originally intended as a humorous name (coined by Lord Bryon) for what is the merging of the Grand Union and Regent’s Canals. The end of the walk brings us into the Paddington Basin, where contemporary architecture lines the waterfront, in a kind of mini Docklands. The five-mile route provides tranquillity and a chance for those living in London, to enjoy the green environment in the very heart of the city, as well as a small taster of the walks ODL offers.
What to bring
Depends on Weather but comfortable trainers or walking boots will suffice. It's a fairly flat route along established pathways. If the weather is a bit British-iffy a waterproof should be brought.
Food & drink
It's a short walk, but there are no shops once we leave Kings Cross, so bring a snack or sandwich for your dinner to eat enroute. Also, remember to bring plenty of water.
