A beautiful 9 mile linear walk starting out from Chester-Le-Street along the river and heading to the beautiful, secluded Finchale Abbey. Finchale ("Finkle") was founded in 1196 as a holiday retreat for the monks of Durham. Nowadays, the ruins nestle in a sweeping curve of the River Wear and are a beautiful spot for a picnic. After we've taken our share of history and cake, we'll walk on across The Scogs and Barkers Haugh to approach Durham from the country.

This is a linear walk which will start in Chester-Le-Street and finish in Durham city centre with tea and cake/a pint. Transport back to the start point is possible by regular buses or trains.
