Penrith to Windermere Multiday Expedition
5 people attending
1 place left
A 2.5 day hike carrying all your gear from Penrith centre, over High Street in the east Lakes, and down into Windermere to finish. Two nights camping out, the first at a basic farm campsite (no showers, no shop), the second up in the wilds. Much of the route will follow the old Roman Road between the two forts of Penrith and Ambleside.
PLEASE READ ALL SECTIONS, INCLUDING WHAT TO BRING AND FOOD+DRINK
You can find out more about Wild Camping in the booklet accessible from here ... https://www.outdoorlads.com/my-first-wild-camping-event.
You’ll need:
- to be an experienced mountain walker;
- have the full range of outdoor wild camping kit - this can take a lot of research and shopping time if you don’t already have it;
- a high level of fitness to carry your food, water, sleeping bag, sleeping mat and small tent for 2.5 days.
This event is not suitable to dogs
Note, there’s no water to be found enroute during the day. We will need a short walk Saturday eve to find a stream in flow.
Most of the time we’ll be on defined trails, however some of the time we may be on difficult terrain with no trail. Saturday’s route can be quite boggy underfoot, and the trip can be quite exposed to wind even in July. I’ve had snow here in June!
I expect that we’ll walk about 6km along roads on Friday evening, 20-25+ km on Saturday inc 1000m of ascent, and 15-20+ km on Sunday - it’ll all depend on the prevailing wind and where we camp.
If you’re unsure if this event is for you, or you need equipment support, then contact the leader by private message.

What to bring
Please review the Outdoorlads kit lists for a general guide, but essential on this walk are:
- previously used good hiking footwear
- waterproof jacket and overtrousers
- small DISCREET tent or bivvy bag
- head torch with adequate battery life and low light output (to avoid locals' attention)
- sleeping bag and mat
- personal hygiene materials inc trowel and toilet paper
- any medication
- sun protection
- adequate warm clothing
- cooking equipment
- rucksack and
- enough food and drink (see the comments above about water in food and drink section).
Your full rucksack (including water) should ideally weigh less than 14kg, certainly less than ¼ of your weight, and many will get well below 14kg; if it risks being heavier, then try to share tents or cooking equipment with other members of the group.
Walking poles may be useful to help get up and down slopes.

Food & drink
Bring enough food to cover your needs for the duration of the event - 2.5 days. Once we leave there will be no chance to buy anything.
Water - we can access water at the farm Friday eve and Saturday morning. There’s then no guarantee of water until Saturday night, and that may involve scouting around or a walk.
You’ll need to make appropriate arrangements to render the water fit for your consumption, eg purifier or purification tablets.
3 x 1L or more are appropriate to carry: one to drink from and the other two with purification tablets at work.
