Explore the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors National Park, rising over the Roman market town of Guisborough, with panoramic views towards the North Sea, on this circular walk with a mix of terrains.
Our route takes in some of the historic buildings of old Guisborough, before we start our ascent through woodland. As we reach the ridge, we will benefit from beautiful views across Guisborough and on towards Hartlepool. We will enjoy some time at Highcliff, before descending towards a more exposed area of moorland. Here we will pass Roland’s Close, the remains of five iron age circular huts, probably dating from early in the 1st century AD. They are named after their excavator who died in 1978 and are the sole example of their kind in North-East Yorkshire.
As we walk on, we pass through an exposed area of open moorland, home to sheep, black headed gulls and other wildlife. This part of the walk has no shade, so if it’s a hot day, please ensure that you have sun cream, a hat and plenty of water.
We descend through trees and farmland, before reaching the grand finale. The majestic remains of Guisborough Priory, that dates from the 12th century, will tower above you as we walk back towards Guisborough.
After the walk, there will be an opportunity for a drink at Cookfellas courtyard garden, before we head home.

What to bring
Water: Bring at least 2 litres if possible. Hot drinks recommended, it gets cold quickly on the exposed moorland section.
Medicines: If you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Rucksack: A 20l day backpack or similar. They are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely.
Footwear: Whilst it is summer, we may encounter boggy/muddy conditions at points, so please wear boots designed for hiking.
Socks: Proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters.
Layered clothing: Lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid-layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece).
Trousers: Ideally not jeans which become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and easier to dry. On warm days shorts are ok but be prepared for wind when we reach the summit of our walk.
Waterproof jacket: Breathable fabrics are more comfortable and drier.
Hat or cap: Hats will keep you warm and protect you from the wind, and give you shade if the sun is shining down on us.
Sunglasses: For any sunny day.
Sun cream: You need to protect your skin from the sun, even on cloudy days.
Snacks: Bring biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit for example and put them somewhere easy to get hold of
Food & drink
Please bring a packed lunch and drinks. Plenty of water/juice, and bring extra if the weather is going to warm.
There are local shops and several supermarkets in Guisborough should you need anything before the walk.
Once we leave Guisborough, there won't be any access to food and drink along the route until we return to the town
