This is a great opportunity to develop your basic map reading skills with this FREE professional outdoor course held in the Peak District. There will be a number of courses running over the winter.
Cover essential map reading skills on this two day course where you'll learn how to use 'handrail features' like paths and walls to guide you along your way as well learning how to measure distance, understand grid references and plan your own routes. You’ll also learn the basics of how to use a compass and how to use it with your map to ensure you don’t get lost. The Bronze Award will take you from relying on friends or guidebooks to being able to plan a walk and follow it successfully.
The National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) is a personal performance scheme for all ages to learn navigation skills and gain confidence to get out and enjoy the countryside. Their Navigator Awards give lovers of the outdoors, whatever their sport, age or fitness, the freedom to explore the paths, trails, hills and mountains of Britain. Progress through the Bronze and Silver Awards to take you from being an absolute map and compass novice to become an expert navigator.
The course will run from 10am to 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday and you must attend both days in full to be eligible for the award. There is small certificate fee of £5 that will need paying to the event leader on the weekend (OutdoorLads will cover this cost for active leaders - please drop a note to email@example.com if you'd like us to pay this for you.)
This course will be led by an OutdoorLads Leader and run jointly with his own outdoor business so there will be non-ODL members on the course with you. The course is being offered not by OutdoorLads, but by MountainXperience, free of charge to OutdoorLads members. Places are very limited to please only sign up if you're certain you're able to attend.
If you're not local to the Peak District you'll need to arrange your own accommodation nearby.
You can find out more about the course and a full syllabus at www.mountainxperience.uk/bronze-nnas-award.html
