This event is for members of all levels of experience and all are welcome to come along to any of the sessions.
Bouldering is a form of climbing where instead of long high routes, the 'problems', as they are referred to, tend to be shorter and focus on technique, balance, body positioning and sometimes power. Because of this different emphasis, bouldering doesn't have the hassle of climbing with ropes, harnesses and belaying, which makes the activities excellent for newcomers to the sport.
If you're a seasoned climber you won't need convincing about the benefits of bouldering, but for those who've never climbed more than a staircase, the benefits are wide ranging: from the physical - improved strength, tone, balance, power and coordination; mental - problem solving, focus, concentration and body awareness; to the emotional - relaxation, a sense of achievement and a feeling that mind and body are working together perfectly ('feeling psyched'). On top of all this, bouldering tends to be a very social sport where you can hang out with mates and each have a go as you feel regardless of what level you climb at.
IMPORTANT! - Participation Statement
You MUST complete a Participation Statement, here, in addition to booking your event space before attending an OutdoorLads event. You only need to complete this Participation Statement once, not for each event you attend.
COVID-19: Events Participation Statement
OutdoorLads draws your attention to the fact that travelling and being away from home increases the risk of receiving and transmitting Coronavirus, whilst it is present in the UK. You are likely to choose not to participate in OutdoorLads events whilst there is a risk of Coronavirus transmission. However, should you choose to participate in OutdoorLads events whilst the risk is present, you must be aware of and follow the law and government guidelines, both when travelling to and from events as well as when participating in events.
Please note that every person participating should be aware of (and accept) that those members perceived as ‘in charge’ or leading the event are not necessarily qualified, do not need to be qualified, and are not regarded by OutdoorLads, or themselves as ‘technical experts’ but are amateur climbers with some experience and who are happy to impart their knowledge. Any advice given should be considered with this in mind by the recipient.
By signing up to and attending an OutdoorLads event, you are confirming that you have read, understood and accept the content of this statement.
PLEASE NOTE DESPITE THE LIFTING OF COVID RESTRICTIONS, LCC STILL REQUIRES ATTENDEES TO WEAR A MASK/FACE COVERING WHEN AT THE RECEPTION AREA OF THEIR CLIMBING CENTRES AND RECOMEND TO KEEP THEM ON WHEN NOT CLIMBING.
Do I need a guided session?
If you have never tried bouldering before it is recommended that you have a guided session from the event leader, who will go through everything you will need to know to boulder safely before joining in with the rest of the group.
All those attending the event must also be aware of the centre's own terms and conditions of participation and abide by them, along with any instructions given by the centre’s staff. Everyone must also take responsibility for their own safety while participating in Indoor climbing events.
Independent boulderer?
As above all attending the event must abide by the centre's T&Cs etc. As an experienced boulderer you are at all times responsible for your own safety actions and involvement. As such, you should use your own judgement in taking up advice given either by OutdoorLads Volunteers or other experienced climbers.
COVID-19 – IMPORTANT, Please read the following before you sign up to this event:
- Anyone with COVID-19 symptoms, even if they are extremely mild, or who lives or is in a support bubble with someone showing symptoms, is asked not to attend. This is in line with the government’s coronavirus advice.
- You must also immediately self-isolate and not attend the event if you or someone in your household or support bubble shows coronavirus symptoms or tests positive. You can find the NHS self-isolation guidance here.
- OutdoorLads strongly encourages all attendees to take a rapid lateral flow test immediatly prior to attending an event. This will help to keep everyone safe. Free lateral flow test kits can be ordered here: https://www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests
- This event takes place after 19 July 2021, which is currently the earliest date by which the Government hopes that we will have entered Step 4 of the Roadmap out of lockdown. At step 4, the Government hopes to have removed all legal limits on social contact.
- It is possible that Step 4 takes place at a date later than 19 July 2021 and could affect this event. We will review the situation as things change and will advise members signed up to the event if there are changes necessary to ensure compliance with restrictions in place at the time of the event.
- If the event is unable to proceed sue to Covid-19 restrictions, a replacement date will be offered, or a full refund.
- We must all remember that COVID-19 remains a part of our lives. We are going to have to keep living our lives differently to keep ourselves and others safe. We must carry on with ‘hands, face, space’. Comply with the COVID-Secure measures that remain in place. Meet outdoors when we can and keep letting fresh air in. Get tested when needed. Get vaccinated when offered. If we all continue to play our part, we will be that bit closer to a future that is more familiar.

What to bring
You don't need much equipment for bouldering at all. The only specialist kit you will need are rock climbing shoes which can be hired from the centre if you haven't got your own. Kit hire prices can be found at www.vauxeast.co.uk/prices/
There are free unlocked cages for your bags and optional secure lockers for valuables which require you to bring your own padlock.
What to Wear
It is best to wear either shorts, combats or tracksuit bottoms with a t-shirt or vest. No jeans or any form of trouser which hampers movement. If you have any OutdoorLads branded clothing then please try and wear this as it will give the group a good level of visibility.
Any jewellery such as rings, watches, chains or bangles should be removed before beginning the session to prevent injury.
Note that Vauxwall now offer discounted entry rates when you buy their punchcards, as well as money off items from their shop. All you need to do is wear your Outdoorlads t-shirt!
Food & drink
We don't have a planned break, but encourage everyone to take a rest for a snack and to rehydrate during the session. There is a cafe area at the centre where hot and cold drinks along with snacks can be purchased. Water fountains are available to refill your water bottles.
After we finish climbing there is the option of heading to the local pub where we can catch up with how our climbing went during the session, along with a spot of lunch.
