January is the perfect time to give bowling's "cooler" cousin a try. Think boules, shuffleboard and ice rinks all combined into one fun activity!
The origins of "shuffleboard on ice" are a bit hazy but it is believed to be one of the oldest team sports in the world. The first recognised curling clubs were in Scotland in the early 19th Century and the sport was welcomed into the Olympic fold in 1998.
Traditionally, curling stones (known formally as "rocks") have come from Ailsa Craig, off the Ayrshire coast of Scotland; today however rocks also come from the Trefor Granite Quarry in Wales. Olympic competition rocks (which can only come from Ailsa Craig) weigh 20kg and are 277mm wide by 136mm high.
The aim of the game is to slide the rock along a sheet of ice (actually called the "sheet") toward the "house"; points are scored based on how many rocks are closest to the centre of the house. In competition, the path of the rock can be altered by "sweeping" the ice which can cause the rock to move faster, slower or in a slightly different angle. I'm not sure if sweeping will take place on our sheets but hopefully we will have a chance to test our broom skills!
We will have 2 lanes, allowing 6 players per lane and will figure out teams before we get started! There is a £7.00 per person playing fee, payable upon arrival at the venue; there are numerous places around Coal Drops Yard for food and drink.
Our sheets are booked for 15:00 and I will be in the area around 13:30 if anyone is interested in meeting up for a light lunch and drinks.
If this is your first ODL event, fear not! I have served as a new member "ambassador" at several events and we will all make you feel very welcome! If you have any questions please DM, email or message me on Telegram or WhatsApp.
Please make sure you check out the "What Kit to Bring" section below for important information!
Although Coal Drops Yard is fully accessible, there may be some difficulty getting onto the curling sheet. Don't let that put you off - DM me with any questions or concerns you may have.

IMPORTANT! - Participation Statement
You MUST complete a Participation Statement, in addition to booking your event space before attending an OutdoorLads event. You only need to complete this Participation Statement once, not for each event you attend.
Anyone with COVID-19 symptoms, even if they are extremely mild, or who has recently tested positive for Covid-19, is asked not to attend.
What to bring
As this takes place outside, cold weather gear will be needed! You will need flat soled shoes to wear on the sheet, and a jacket and gloves between each turn. There is a small shed at the end of the sheet to keep us out of the worst of the elements!
Food & drink
There are a number of food and drink venues in Coal Drops Yard, including Barrafina, Casa Pastor, hicce, and Morty & Bob's.
I will be at the venue around 13:30 if anyone wants to meet up for lunch and drinks!
