Join us on a picturesque 10 mile walk through the Chiltern Hills, looping around the country retreat of the Prime Minister.
We start our walk in the pretty and historic market town of Wendover which dates back to circa 965. The initial 2kms is gentle ascent, climbing approximately 120 metres to the Coombe Hill Monument, built in 1904 to commemorate those who died in the Boer War (1899 - 1902). There are sweeping views of the Vale of Aylesbury and as we descend we catch our first glimpse of Chequers, the Prime Minsters country retreat.
Heading across fields to the village of Ellesborough (old English for 'hill where asses are pastured') walking passed the village church which has been used by Prime Ministers for their Sunday worship when in residence. Leaving Ellesborough we head up and around Beacon Hill looking down on Cymbeline's Mount where King Cunobelinus is said to have battled with Roman invaders.
We now head towards the Chequers estate, crossing inside the main gates before heading back up into the Chiltern Hills, wandering through the woods and fields before heading back down into Wendover.
Is it dog friendly? Dogs are welcome but please note and abide by the Countryside Code (https://tinyurl.com/rlqvp3h) and be prepared for a couple of stiles / hills on the walk. Please also remember not everyone loves dogs as much as you do so please be mindful of other members.
