Hawkesbury and Horton

The first part of today's 14km walk takes us from the Cotswold village of Hawkesbury Upton, where we head out along the Cotswold Way passing close to the Grade I listed 16th century manor house of Horton Court, which has featured in both BBC TV's Poldark and Wolf Hall dramas. Horton Court also incorporates a 12th century Norman Hall, built by Robert de Bellafago, however this is hidden from view within its walls.  

From here we visit the Iron Age hill fort of Horton Camp, with its steep natural defences on its South and West elevations, and a 3 metre embankment to the West and East, where we should (weather permitting) get far reaching views across South Gloucestershire out towards Wickwar, Alveston and the Severn Bridge.  

We then drop down into the village of Horton and then across the fields to our lunch stop in the ancient woodland of the Lower Woods Nature Reserve. After lunch the route continues through the woods down to the Little Avon River, across Hawkesbury Common, before climbing back up the hill to our start point.
