This event is a sub-event of the Great Whernside Camping Weekend - click the link for more details!
Join us for a full day of (Trad)outdoor climbing at Great Wolfrey; The ultimate in moorland crags. Good rock, fine views and unspoiled. What more could you ask for (apart from it being nearer to the road that is - it's about an hour's walk in from the car park)?
Great Wolfrey has a great mix of Trad climbing routes and Bouldering problems too! There's about 130 climbing routes mixed across all climbing grades, including around 40 routes below a HVS grade and around 60 bouldering problems too. See the UKC website for full details.
This event is aimed at climbers with some 'trad' experience outdoor, although we will try to cater for less experienced climbers - depending on the availability of leaders and the experience of other climbers. At the very least you must have some recent indoor climbing experience, ideally with OutdoorLads, and be able to confidently put on a harness and tie yourself onto the rope safely.
Please note that priority for booking is given to those on the Great Whernside Camping Weekend until 1st July 2019. So, unless you are booked onto the camping event, please do not sign up for this climbing this until after that date. If you do, those that are on the camping event will be prioritised and moved up any waiting list onto the main attendance list. More places may become available depending on the availability of leaders.
You may also wish to keep up to date with all outdoorlads outdoor climbing events here, or through our facebook group to be notified about new outdoor climbing events as they go online and to keep in touch with other outdoor climbers in ODL.
Participation statement
As a BMC Affiliate member, OutdoorLads draws your attention to the fact that climbing is an activity with a danger of personal injury or death. You should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for your own actions and involvement.
Please note that every person participating should be aware of (and accept) that those members perceived as ‘in charge’ or leading the event are not necessarily qualified, do not need to be qualified, and are not regarded by OutdoorLads, or themselves as ‘technical experts’ but are amateur climbers with some experience and who are happy to impart their knowledge. Any advice given should be considered with this in mind by the recipient.
Members should also understand that rock climbing is weather dependant – more so than some other outdoor activities (not least as it can be dangerous to climb on wet rock). Whilst we will do everything reasonably possible to run the event as described, the event leader may need to change the location and/or other event details to best suit the anticipated weather. We will advise members booked on, or interested, in the event of this as soon as is practical, but you should understood that in certain circumstances it may be necessary to move the event to an indoor climbing centre, or cancel the event all together.
What to bring
You will need to bring your own climbing gear, including: helmet, harness, rock shoes, chalk-bag, Belay plate and screw-gate karabiner. If you don't have these, please message the event leader when booking as we may able to provide them - but unfortunately we can't provide climbing shoes.
If you have outdoor climbing gear, including rope(s) and rack then please bring this along, but please make sure it is in good condition.
If you have a bouldering mat - bring it along too, as there'll be plenty of oppurtunity to use it!!
What to Wear
Bring clothes suitable for spending a full day outdoors, which should include wind & waterproofs, and a few layers that will allow you to be comfortable whilst climbing as well as between climbs (Outdoor climbing can mean a lot of standing around waiting). Also wear boots or trainers for the walk up to the crag.
Food & drink
You will need a packed lunch, drinks and any snacks to last you the day as we will spend the full day at the crag.
