Garden cities and villages in Hertfordshire

This is a LINEAR walk, approximately 11 miles in length.
We start from Welwyn Garden City (WGC). WGC was the second garden city in England (founded 1920) and one of the first new towns (designated 1948). Heading out via Sherrardswood park (an ancient woodland), we quickly pick up the disused railway line that ran from WGC to Luton and Dunstable (the Ayot Greenway). Heading North via Ayot St Lawrence (and its fantastic medieval church), we meander through the glorious countryside of North Hertfordshire before we reach the pretty village of Old Knebworth. We pass through the grounds of the famous Knebworth House before then heading East to (New) Knebworth, the pub and the railway station.
The walk will finish at Knebworth railway station at approximately 17:00.
For those returning to London, trains depart for Kings Cross (via Finsbury Park for easy underground connections). at xx12 and xx42 (journey time 37 minutes to Kings Cross via Finsbury Park). Those arriving by car can catch a southbound train back as far as WGC.
PLEASE CHECK TRAIN TIMES BEFORE TRAVELLING.

What to bring
Water: bring at least a litre
Medicines: if you have any ailments etc.
Rucksack: or any other bag
Footwear: hiking boots or sturdy trainers.
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece)
Trousers: ideally not jeans which become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and on warm days shorts are OK
Waterproof jacket: breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry
Hat or cap: stay warm in winter and shaded in summer
Sunglasses: for any sunny day, even in winter
Sun cream: can be useful even on cloudy and winter days
Snacks: bring biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit for example and put them somewhere easy to get hold of

Food & drink
You will need a packed lunch, and plenty of water and snacks to see you through the day. We will stop for a picnic lunch at a suitably scenic spot; for your own comfort you may wish to bring something to sit on.
Time permitting, there will be a pub stop at about half of the way along the route, in the pretty village of Ayot St Lawrence or alternatively at the end at the fantastic Station Pub in Knebworth.
