Lower Largo to Anstruther

This is one of six planned linear walks over sections of the beautiful Fife Coastal Path.

Today's walk along the Fife Coast starts in the small village of Lower Largo, the birthplace of Alexander Selkirk, the real life adventures of whom Daniel Defoe based his novel Robinson Crusoe. We walk through the village passing a statue of Robinson Crusoe and continue on to the shore and along the vast beach in Largo Bay before reaching Shell Bay.

On the route towards the village of Elie, we have a choice of options. The main path takes us over the top of cliffs where there are great views of the coastline and the remains of WW2 gun placements before descending to the shore. A more dramatic and strenuous option is on the famous chain walk around the base of the cliffs. The chain walk is of short duration but is challenging and only for those with a head for heights and is dependent on low tide. It involves using footholds in the rocks and chains to give support to go up and over sections of rock.  Please note that both options will be available and that there is no requirement whatsoever to do the chain walk if you would rather not. Individual decisions will be made on the day and is in any case weather and tide dependent. Please Google Elie Chain Walk for further information - description and photographs can be found on a number of sites. Both path options meet up again at the base of the cliffs and we continue the walk towards Earlsferry.

The latter sections take us through the picturesque villages of Elie, St Monans and Pittenweem before arriving in the coastal town of Anstruther where there are many options for some delicious fish and chips. Bus options are available here for onward travel home.
