Ecclesbourne Valley Railway and Alport Height

Join us on a linear walk from Wirkworth to Duffield via Alport Height with a ride back on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway heritage line. The line is operated by heritage steam locomotives, including no. 2746 Bagnall saddle tank engine, The Duke, and diesels including a BRCW Type 3 and a Brush Type 2.
The Wirksworth Branch was built by the Midland Railway as an alternative route to Manchester via Rowsley, hence all of the bridges along the line are built to the double-tracked grand Midland Railway style.
Note: you will have to buy a single (one-way) ticket from Wirksworth station before beginning the walk for the ride back from Duffield on the EVR. The price is £12 (£11 concession) at the time of writing. The train leaves Duffield station at 16:20.
If you can, come early and spend a little time at the station cafe situated in an old railway carriage, open from 09:30, and visit the nearby museum before heading off on the walk.
Alport Height is a popular picnic site with extensive views to the South at over 300m (1,000 feet) within easy reach of Derby. It has been in the care of the National Trust since 1930.
On a clear day you can see Derby city centre, The Wrekin, the Long Mynd, Clee Hill, the Sutton Coldfield and Lichfield masts, the Birmingham city centre skyline, and the Lickey Hills beyond. The Pye Green BT Tower on Cannock Chase can also be seen. The eight radio masts on top of the hill can be seen for miles around.
Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead when required and under control at all times.
Waitlist: If this event is fully booked, add yourself to the waitlist. Places often become available closer to the date. If you will not attend, cancel your attendance as soon as possible to allow someone else to take your place.
