A Dandy Easter in The Peaks

Upper Hulme is our destination for Easter 2023, located in the South West of the Peaks, harbouring beautiful sights such as Luds Church, Hen Cloud and of course the famous Roaches. This area of The Peaks also borders the lovely Macclesfield Forest, great gin distiller there btw, offering MTB potential but also great walks. Blessed with views to the Teggs Nose viewpoint, Manchester Airport and even Joddrell Bank telescope proudly sticking out on the Cheshire plains searching the skies for more intelligent life!
The Roaches make not only for a great walking area taking in some of the sights above but it is a great and indeed popular climbing location, meaning we may be able to offer some beginner climbing opportunities to those interested. This is subject to leader availability of course. To the North West is the village of Flash, the (somewhat undisputed) highest village in GB at 457m above sea level, nearby is the lovely Gradbach Mill once a wonderful YHA of many a great OutdoorLads event but now sadly in the hands of private owners.
With Easter being right in the midst of spring we should benefit from some wonderful British weather - but the Peaks are known for being beautiful whatever the weather, so we can rest assured in the joy that our bunkhouse has a wood burning stove in the main common space to collapse in front of if the weather is not so kind.
The bunkhouse itself is fairly typical, its not The Ritz - though it has a modern kitchen and bathroom/shower area plus a spacious dining and separate living space. Please be aware there is no heating to the bedroom area other than heat from the wood burner. You will also need to bring a sleeping bag - very important! The bunkhouse will provide mattress and pillow but no bedding. A warm sleeping bag or duvet and extra pillows if needed will see you through!
We look forward to welcoming you to this beautiful part of the world especially if you have not been here before. We promise good food, plenty of laughs, great walks and other events plus great memories. So do not miss out on Easter in the Peaks with DAndy!

Dogs
The bunkhouse permits up to three dogs, however at the time of writing (28.01.23) all spaces are taken. All dogs MUST remain in the living spaces and be kept under control and not allowed to roam into the kitchen please. We may group doggie owners together for sleeping arrangements. Woof Woof!
IMPORTANT! - Participation Statement
You MUST complete a Participation Statement, in addition to booking your event space before attending an OutdoorLads event. You only need to complete this Participation Statement once, not for each event you attend.

What to bring
For the Bunk House please see below
Bedding: Please bring a sleeping bag, the hostel does provide pillow and mattress but no bedding. VERY IMPORTANT
PJ's: With the hostel bedrooms not having heating, you should plan ahead for that, either with your style of sleeping bag or appropriate bed clothes.
Wash kit: remember to include a towel, shower gel and shampoo
Flip Flops: or something similar to wear in and around the hostel
Earplugs: for the shared sleeping arrangements
Comfy Clothes: the hostel has no heating, other than a communal wood-burner in the dining area so having some appropriate warm clothing for the hostel that are comfortable is a good thing.
For the Walking Events, please check the below Kit List:
Water: bring at least two litres
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Day rucksack: typically 20-30 litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
Boots: waterproof and breathable and designed for hiking, trainers are OK if the ground is dry and there’s little chance of rain
Gaiters: recommended for wet weather or boggy conditions
Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece)
Trousers: ideally no jeans as they become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and on warm days shorts are OK
Waterproof jacket: essential when hiking in all but the calmest of weather, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry
Gloves: Windproof, or better still, waterproof gloves are the best choice, bring a spare pair if expecting rain
Hat or cap: stay warm in winter and shaded in summer
Sunglasses: for any sunny day, even in winter
Sun cream: can be useful even on cloudy and winter days
Snacks: bring biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit for example and put them somewhere easy to get hold of
Lunch: bring a packed lunch unless otherwise stated
