Cycle The Tissington & Manifold Trails
3 people attending
6 places left
Spend the Bank Holiday Monday on a leisurely cycle in the White Peak area of the Peak District
We shall ride the full length of the both the Tissington and Manifold Trails, former railway routes now converted to very popular routes for both walkers and cyclists passing through dramatic scenery and includes a couple of tunnels.
Starting at the Northern end of the Tissington Trail, we will use quiet roads down Long Dale before heading through Hartington to Hulme End where we join the Manifold Trail, passing through the steep sided Dale, dominated by Thor's Cave and a disappearing River.
Once at the end of the Manifold Trail, the hard work starts, after a short section (about 1 mile) on a main road, we follow a single track road across to Ashbourne via the pretty village of Ilam, but be warned, there are a couple of seriously steep section that may well need to walked in places.
We can make a stop at one of Ashbourne's many cafes for refreshments, before joining the Tissington Trail which climbs steadily back to the finish.
Whilst the ascent may appear significant, we have plenty of time to take the climbs slowly and we will ride at the pace of the slowest, wait at the top of climbs should you need to walk and no one we be left behind.
For this ride a Mountain Bike, Road, Gravel or Hybrid bike is suitable.
All the trail surfaces are good, and even paved for much of the Manifold Trail. The length of the ride maybe a little challenging for Mountain Bikes with knobbly tyres.
Should you have any questions about the route please message the leader.

What to bring
For this ride, Mountain Bike, Road, Gravel or Hybrid bike is suitable. All the trail surfaces are good, and even paved for much of the Manifold Trail. The length of the ride maybe a little challenging for Mountain Bikes with knobbly tyres.
Apart from your bike remember the following:.
- Spare inner tube and tyre levers. Also any special tools that your bike needs.
- Food - bring lunch and small snacks such as chocolate bars and energy foods.
- Plenty of water (minimum 2lts)
- Eye protection - impact from a bee, grit or even a fly at speed is extremely unpleasant, sunglasses may do if not made of glass and not too shaded.
- Clothing: choose suitable clothes and footwear for the weather forecast and time of year. You will be exercising so lightweight layered clothing is best. Shorts are best even in rain, as they allow free movement of your legs. Jeans are useless if it rains but tracksuit bottoms need to be not too baggy or they may snag in the chain and cause an accident. You'll need trainers or similar with grippy soles for standard pedals.
- Cyclist's Helmet - Outdoorlads policy asks you to wear a helmet on events, however a full face helmet and pads are recommended..
- Bag you will need a small day-sack to carry essential clothing, water and an emergency snack.
