The walk will start at the eastern gates of the Conwy Suspension Bridge; from there we'll walk past Conwy Castle and along a section of the town walls before leaving the town. Next is a walk up a long lane to reach Parc Mawr woodlands, which we'll walk through to before getting to the top of Craig Celynin. We'll then walk around Tal-y-Fan's south eastern flank before ascending to the summit. Once on the summit, we'll descend to Conwy using the Cambrian Way, finishing at the harbour.
After the walk, there'll be optional fish & chips by the harbour from an award winning chippy in Conwy; if we finish the walk in time.
Points of interest on the route:
Conwy Castle & Town Walls: A UNESCO world heritage site, Conwy's castle and town walls are almost completely intact, making it one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe. We'll be walking along two sections of the wall, once on the way out of Conwy and once on the way back in. For more about Conwy's history, see here.
Parc Mawr Woodlands: Managed by the Woodland Trust, this is an area of deciduous woodland that we'll walk through during our ascent. If we're lucky, we'll see a bluebell bloom as we go through the woods.
Tal-y-Fan Summit: Our highest point of the walk; it may not be the tallest of peaks at 610m, but it is Wales's most northerly mountain, affording it fantastic views of the coast to the north and the higher mountains to the south. Tal-y-Fan is also home to the wild Carneddau ponies, so hopefully we'll also see those near the mountain.
The Cambrian Way: The Cambrian Way is a 300 mile mountain trail from Cardiff Castle to Conwy Castle, which takes in the majority of Wales's tallest peaks. For our descent from Tal-y-Fan to Conwy, we'll be completing the trail's final stretch, which will give us great views of the Welsh coast almost all the way down.
Dogs are welcome, though will need to be on leads if we go through any fields with livestock. There are also several stiles that they may need lifting over.
Once finished, we can go to the nearby pub.
Message the event leader if you've any questions.
