What's this all about?
This hostel weekend is designed especially for dog lovers and dog owners. It will be the third doggy hostel weekend we've run. Every event so far has been a lot of fun, with the dogs mingling together into some form of pack and generally getting along with each other happily, just like the humans.
There aren't many hostels and bunkhouses in the UK prepared to allow more than one or two dogs, but the owners of the this one couldn't have been happier about the idea of a dog friendly weekend when we asked them if we could come.
Where are we going?
For this one, we'll be staying in the Clyngwyn Bunkhouse in the Brecon Beacons, situated in the heart of waterfall country, and very near to the famous caves & waterfalls of Ystradfellte. The waterfalls of Clyngwyn are literally on our doorstep. Sgwd Clun Gwyn waterfall, the first of the falls on the Afon Mellte is only 500m from the farm so a short 5 minute walk away. We are in the closest accommodation to the famous Sgwd Yr Eira waterfalls which are the ones renowned for being able to walk behind them.
Outside the bunkhouse there is a safe, fenced off area for all dogs to explore as well as a circular area with large fire pit and eating area (weather permitting) from where there are beautiful views of the Brecon Beacons. There's also a small stone built roofed building seating 6 people with a log burner. So we will have plenty of space both inside and out.
Dogs
You are welcome to bring a dog, or more, to the event but you don't have to have a dog to come along, So for example, if you're thinking of getting a dog this would also be a good event to come on as there will be plenty of owners to chat to and dogs to borrow. If you just like dogs but haven't got one then you are equally welcome.
Once we get to the event and can work out the fitness levels of the dogs and owners that come along, we will plan some walks that are suitable, whether that's sticking together in one large group or arranging a longer and a shorter walk.
On Sunday we need to check out of the bunkhouse by 11am, but there will be the option to then head out for a Sunday dog walk, including a pub lunch, for anyone who is interested
There is a separate £5 charge per dog for the weekend which you'll need to pay directly to the owner of the bunkhouse on arrival (cash only - please bring the correct amount).
Usual OutdoorLads courtesy requirements apply for dog owners (basically - you're responsible for the behaviour of your own dog/s, for cleaning up after them, bringing anything they need to eat, sleep or play with, and for ensuring they don't over-pester the other dogs and are under control if we're out walking and there are farm animals nearby).
Humans
Whilst quilts and pillows are provided, you'll need to bring linen (or a sleeping bag and sheet) and towels.
Or you can hire linen at £2.50 per set from the owner of the bunkhouse.
All guest must use linen and/or sleeping bag.
Itinerary
Friday Evening: Arrive anytime after 4pm, meet the rest of the group and socialise. Welcome 'meeting' and a late afternoon and/or evening dog walk nearby. We'll have the usual Outdoor lads buffet for the humans so please bring something that can be shared between two or three people (try to avoid too much quiche!)
Saturday Day: After breakfast (which is included in the event cost), we’ll head into the surrounding countryside for a good walk. Depending on the walk route we should be able to stop off at one (or both) of the two nearby pubs on that allow dogs (The White Horse in Pontneddfechan and the New Inn in Ystradfellte). If you prefer though, or intend doing a longer walk on Saturday up into the Brecon Beacons, then please bring a packed lunch with you and maybe pack a flask for a hot drink if it’s cold. There are plenty of options for shorter walks too, directly from the bunkhouse, if you prefer.
Saturday Evening: Relax, socialise, and chillout. Dinner is included in the event cost, and if the weather is suitable we'll get the fire pit going outside.
Sunday: After breakfast (included in the event cost) we need to check out by 11am. There will be a walk after this, incorporating a local pub where we can go for lunch, for anyone who is interested.
Tea & Coffee: Will be provided throughout the weekend.
Other Drinks: Please bring your own.
Dog food: Please bring whatever your dog/s require.

Walking:
For walking, we are in the Brecon Beacons so there's the option to do a high walk, for which you'd need walking boots, hat, gloves, waterproofs, water bottle etc. We'll certainly also have low level walks through the woodland and riverbanks though, so for those you'll be fine wearing wellies or old trainers and a coat, or whatever else you wear when normally walking your dog in the countryside.
