Shake off the New Year blues with a delightful romp by the River Wear and through the woodland of the Lumley Castle estate. We'll head out of Chester-le-Street using part of the Weardale Way footpath before ascending to Great Lumley, gaining spectacular views over Lumley Castle and the Riverside stadium as we ascend. After admiring the chuch, we'll loop round to Lumley Park Burn where we'll descend into the woodland, crossing over the stream before gaining the high ground again to enjoy a dramatic woodland walk. Skirting round hidden woodland cottages, we'll emerge (carefully) next to Lumley Castle Golf Course and chortle heartily at the golfing fashions before regaining the Wearside path to take us back across the park to Chester le Street where tea and cake awaits.
