Caving Day

Castleton - Derbyshire 14 February 2014

Imagine standing in a place that has taken millions of years to form. A place where the walls are made entirely of fossils, entwined with veins of minerals. Move through passages cut by ancient waters, which still flow today and be inspired by cavernous chambers and beautiful crystal formations. The journey into this secret world will take you past ancient sites from long ago. In this astonishing realm you will discover what it is to journey into the heart of our earth, appreciating our geology, minerals, history and more. It is an adventure; a challenge; requiring fortitude and motivation. Derbyshire is one of the UK's best caving areas. Experience a whole new world here on this event! In order to take part in this event you must have already signed up to the Peak District Winter Activity Weekend.

What Will Happen?

We'll be meeting up with our professional caving instructor who will brief us on the activities for the day. We'll drive to the cave we'll be spending the day in. Some caves in the area are on private property and therefore may incur a small nominal charge of a few pounds to gain entry. These charges are not included in the event cost. The caves we'll be doing will be determined by the local weather conditions and will depend on the height of water in the cave systems. This session is suitable for people who have never caved before, but can be made as challenging as people taking part wish. The day will include some minor climbs and scrambles and may include some basic rope work. You will get wet, although you will not need to go fully underwater. After the event we will head back to the hostel, where you can get showered.
