This event is part of the OutdoorLads 2025 *BIG Peaky Weekender* and participation is intended for those attending the weekend event.
We've added this walk last minute as the planned leisure cycle cannot go ahead due to a rock fall. This is an enjoyable and leisurely walk, designed to leave late enough for people to do ParkRun beforehand, should they wish!
If you sign up to this walk, please CANCEL any places on other walks - and especially places on waiting lists - to help us manage who is doing what a little easier, please!
This almost eight mile walk starts off with a gentle stroll down the Monsal Trail towards Bakewell, passing Hassop station before ending up in Bakewell itself. Here you'll have some to yourself to explore and get a bite to eat from one of the many local eateries, including the world famous Bakewell Tart, before re-grouping and taking a stroll to the Thornbridge Brewery - a fantastic place for a rest and a pint with fellow OutdoorLads. After a little stop there, we'll continue our wander back towards Ashford-in-the-Water, a delightful Peak District village with a couple of great pubs - we'll take the opportunity to sample one of them, possibly the Bulls Head, which also has a lovely beer garden to relax in.
From Ashford-in-the-Water, we'll walk the short distance back to Thornbridge Outdoors happy and content after a lovely afternoon out in the Peaks!
This walk is leisurely, with some relatively gentle uphills and lots of flat, easy bits too! Come and join us for a lovely sociable day out!
IMPORTANT! - Participation Statement

What to bring
The terrain that we will be covering is on and off-road. It may also be wet, muddy and stony. If conditions are wet and/or windy, shelter may be limited.
- Water: bring at least two litres
- Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
- Day rucksack: typically 20-30 litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
- Boots: waterproof (or waterproof socks...) and breathable and designed for hiking. If you wear your best trainers they may get ruined.
- Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters, I would recommend waterproof socks.
- Layered clothing: A t-shirt may well do if it is sunny but layers will help otherwise
- Trousers: ideally no jeans (weather dependent) as they become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and if it is warm, shorts are OK.
- Waterproof jacket: essential when hiking in all but the calmest of weather, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry
- Waterproof trousers: that you can put on over your trousers if the weather turns against us
- Hat or cap: to provide some shade from the sun or warmth if it is cold
- Sunglasses: so you're not squinting in the sun
- Gloves because nobody likes walking with cold hands! Can leave these in the tent if it turns out to be a lovely spring day :-)
- Sun cream: Yes, essential even if overcast (Get a SFP30+ with UVA 5*, most supermarket own brands are good here). It is summer and sunburn will be painful
- Snacks: bring biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit for example and put them somewhere easy to get hold of
- Lunch: bring a packed lunch
Food & drink
Drinking water, snacks, and a packed lunch if you're not buying lunch in Bakewell.
