Black Rock sands is a stunning beach near the Lleyn Penninsula in North Wales, with Dunes, a SSSI and proximity to the Snowdownia National Park, this camping weekend can be as chilled or action packed as we like. The site is ideal for water sports, exploring the coast, visiting Portmerion, taking a hike round and up Cnicht.
Friday night
Aiming to arrive sometime after 4 pm, our main goal for the evening is to pitch our tents and then relax. The beach is only a few hundred meters from the camp site, so we may take an evening strol or if the sea is warm enough, a splash about and as the sun sets.
Saturday
There are a number of options available to us on Saturday, weather dependent.
If the weather is sunny, there's no harm in us staying on the beach, sun bathing or taking a short walk along down to the southern beaches and dunes. Bring some beach toys / games, a kite or just your towel to lie on. Alternatively, with Porthmadog being nearby, you may enjoy a short walk to the town and catch the steam train for a relaxing ride through Snowdownia.
For the more energetic members, longer walks can be arranged, though we may have to drive to the start points. Cnicht is a long ridge and, at 689 m, is the fifth-highest peak in the Moelwynion mountain range and Mynnydd Mawr, being a little further north is a mountain in Snowdonia, North Wales, situated approximately 7 km (4.3 mi) west of Snowdon itself, overlooking Llyn Cwellyn and being the northern outlier of the Moel Hebog group, also called "Yr Eliffant" ('The Elephant').
Sunday
Again, weather dependent there are a number of options. If it's sunny, a morning by the beach is an option, but also neaby is Portmerion, a village designed and built between 1925 and 1975 in the style of an italian village.
The village is located near Penrhyndeudraeth, on the estuary of the River Dwyryd, 2 miles (3.2 km) south east of Porthmadog, and 1 mile (1.6 km) from Minffordd railway station.
Sunday we will also need to pack away our tents.
What to bring
Food & drink
You will need to bring enough food and drink for a typical summer weekend at a camp site.
Friday night we will have a buffet meal together at the camp site. Bring two or three small items that need little to no preparation at the camp site. A BBQ can can also be used at the campsite.
Saturday night will depend largely on what we do during the day, but an option is to take a walk to a local pub for a bar meal.
As we are due to have left the camp site by Sunday lunch time, we will aim to eat out at a pub / cafe local to our Sunday activity.
