Join us for a weekend of back to basics camping in Staffordshire.
The small, secluded eco-campsite is set within 12 acres of woodland and wildflower meadow overlooking the beautiful Churnet Valley.
We will have our own private camping area, with firepit, within the wildflower meadow itself, perfect for getting away from it all. The campsite is a great base from which to explore the surrounding countryside by foot.
On the Saturday we will take a relatively easy walk through the Churnet Valley and nearby Dimmingsdale woodlands. Approximately 8 miles in total, we will stop half way round for a pub lunch by the riverside.
There’s also the possibility, for those who’d prefer a more relaxed weekend, to simply chill at the campsite (hopefully in the sun!).
Facilities on the campsite are limited, but perfectly satisfactory. The shared facilities include a compost toilet (yes, this is really an eco camp), a solar shower and washing up facilities.
On dull days, the water in the shower can be on the cool side, so if you're looking for scorching hot power shower, this campsite may not be for you. However, if you're looking for a back to nature, off the beaten track and slightly off the wall adventure, then this event is for you!
Firepit: We will have our own firepit, so please feel free to bring some logs - and don’t forget the marshmallows!
Environment: The owners of this campsite are wholeheartedly committed to a sustainable and eco-friendly way of life, so consideration of this should be given by the group.
Dogs: This campsite does not allow dogs sadly.
Campervans, Caravans, Motorhomes: This is a tent-only campsite.
What to bring
As ever the weather may be unpredictable. Please ensure you have adequate clothing for both wet and dry conditions. A good waterproof jacket is essential, just in case we are unlucky with the weather. Although the paths are mostly well maintained, it may be a little wet and muddy underfoot after rain, so you'll need decent boots. Note that this is only a guide and it’s probably best to consult the weather forecast nearer to the event.
Please review the information provided on the My First Walk Event page on the ODL website for more information on walking kit.
Although this is a back to basics campsite, a tent is still recommended. However if you want to sleep under stars in a bivvy bag then you are welcome to.
You should make sure that you have pitched your tent previously, and have all parts, such as poles and pegs. The event leader has a spare 1-2 person tent you can borrow if you're keen to camp but don’t yet have a tent.
You should bring a sleeping bag that provides adequate warmth, below the temperature that you may expect at night. A decent sleeping mat is also essential – a ‘thermarest’ inflatable mat or a thick rubber yoga-style mat is essential to insulate you from the cold of the ground. Or for a bit more luxury bring an airbed and pump.
There is a campfire on site which can be used to cook and heat water, however you are advised to bring some kind of cooking equipment so that you can cook hot meals and prepare a decent cuppa. Check you have fuel for your camp stove and you know how it works. The bare minimum for eating is a mug, bowl or plate and cutlery. Additional equipment such as chopping board, sharp knife, grater, wooden spoon, etc. depending on what you plan to cook.
WASHING UP GEAR
Sponge / scourer, detergent and tea towel
- A torch, or better still, a head torch
- Toilet roll
- Water bottle
If you're unsure about any of the items in the kit list, please contact the leader.
Food & drink
As this is a camping event, please bring all your own food and drink for the weekend. At the very least you will need food for breakfast and dinner at the campsite on Saturday night. We will be eating at a pub for Saturday lunch.
On Sunday morning there is the option of a very nice cafe for breakfast, located 1 mile from the campsite.
There is only a very small shop nearby, so it is recommended you bring food and drink supplies with you.
