A relaxed medium length cycle with a few hilly climbs along the way

Three ferry crossings in one day and a chance to explore part of the palm tree festooned Isle of Bute and then over Cowal hills to Dunoon.

This is pre practice event for a five ferries one day event later in the year, a chance to practice ferry hopping and cycle legs, this route "relaxed" as ferries on this route are frequent, unlike the later event. There are a few stiff hills on this route, especially in the Cowal Peninsular.

This trip will involve some costs; total ferry fares £11.25 per person, this includes cycles.

For those taking train to the start, train leaves Glasgow central @ 0850 (Train Cost: £10), arrives 0939.

Main meeting point - 0945 Wemyss Bay, for our first ferry. The ferry departs 1005 (ferry cost £3.80) and arrives Rothesay, Isle of Bute 1040.

Meeting point for anyone on Bute 1100 at Victorian Toilets (these are worth a visit to see the opulent interiors).

Cycle 1; Group dependant we can do a loop on Bute of about 10 miles (south, up Bute's windy answer to San Francisco's Lombard street! west out to coast and back north to Rhubodach) or head straight Rhubodach.

Ferry 2; Rhubodach to Colintraive (every 30 min departures) (cost £1.45).

Cycle 2; Up over the hills, with some stunning views to Dunoon 21 miles, with 400m of total assent

Ferry 3; Oh exciting! we have a choice of two ferries!

  • Western ferries (£6), every 20mins vehicle and passenger ferry, you miss Dunoon centre with its Victoria heritage, however if we decide to return to Wemyss this ferry reduces the last cycle, or
  • Calmac's (£5.55) you visit Dunoon town, and drops us at Gourock train station (for those definitely not doing last cycle), passenger only ferry with mostly a 30 min frequency (however hourly at the point we are likely intending traveling).

Cycle 3; Cycle from Gourock to Wemyss Bay Distance: 9miles mostly on a cycle path (1 mile section on road)
