Join OutdoorLads for a wander along the Dunge Valley to the popular rock climbing crag of Windgather Rocks in the western Peak District. Windgather Rocks is a gritstone crag along the ridge marking the Cheshire/Derbyshire border and is a popular spot for learning rock climbing. As the name suggests, it can be rather windy, as it is exposed to the prevailing westerly winds.

The walk will take in Shining Tor, the highest point in Cheshire, making it a challenging climb and an excellent viewpoint. In clear conditions Winter Hill near Bolton, the city of Manchester and much of the Cheshire Plain can be seen, including the radio telescopes at Jodrell Bank.

Highlights of the walk include:

  • Jenkin Chapel, built in 1733
  • Passing through what was once the Dunge Valley Gardens.
  • Lunch at Windgather Rocks
  • Lamaload Reservoir
  • The high level walk past Pym Chair and the ridge to Cats Tor and Shining Tor

The walk is 9 miles with some steep sections.
