FLASH SALE! USE CODE "PINOTGRIGIO" TO SAVE £12 ON THIS CAMPING WEEKEND!
Join OutdoorLads for camping in the grounds of this beautiful Surrey hostel, nestled away in an area of outstanding natural beauty. A relaxed escape from the city weekend; a place to feel like you have reconnected with the countryside, to socialize, and to generally relax after a busy week haring around the busy old city.
This quirky little event will double up as both the hostel and the camping event. Please see the link to the hostel event if you wish to attend but not camp. You should also be aware that whilst campers have access to the Friday Buffet tea, hot drinks and showers at the hostel, it will otherwise be self catering for breakfasts and Saturday dinner.
With a gentle stroll in the rolling Surrey countryside to engage us on Saturday, local wine estates to explore, and of course the standard wonderful OutdoorLads fun, what more could you want from a weekend away? So come and join us at Tanners Hatch hostel in this mid-summer weekend.
There are 14 camping spots. With access to the hostels recently renovated and upgraded showers, lounge space and extensive grounds - we can hope for good weather - Tanners Hatch makes for an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle.
Similar to previous years, there will be a chance to participate in a fun wine tasting evening. This will be an led by Damo and you will be asked to bring a particular varietal bottle for group blind tasting [please see 'Food & Drink' section below]. We will discover the differences and unique characteristics of each grape varietal in a thought-provoking, competitive and contemplative way.
There is also the local vineyard where if you don't want to do a long walk on Saturday you can explore still and sparkling wines as part of a paid hourly tour ( £11.50 per head), there is a conservatory, shop and restaurant to explore at your leisure where you can taste and purchase the wines that are locally produced.
Dog owners - if you want to bring your dog to this camping event, we can arrange that for you! There is a small additional fee payable to the YHA. Please message the event leader or e-mail liam.russell@outdoorlads.com if you want to arrange to bring your best friend. We do ask that dogs are not taken into the hostel's communal areas, however.
What to bring
Your normal camping kit: tent, roll mat and sleeping bags, along with clothes, food and drink for the weekend. Might be worth bringing a battery to charge your phone as well and a head torch for those middle of the night loo trips!
Food & drink
Friday Evening
Bring an item or two for the traditional Friday night buffet and we will eat together in the hostel. Or you can self cater and join us for the briefing afterwards.
Tea and coffee are available at the hostel, but this camping event is otherwise self catered. You will need to bring food drink and cooking equipment to sustain you for the rest of the weekend.
Optional 'Varietal' Wine Tasting on Saturday Evening
Please bring a bottle of varietal wine to participate!
A varietal wine is one made from a pure grape rather than a blend of two or more. Look for a single varietal name on the bottle label and not two names. Aim to buy a varietal that you haven't tried before (the ones towards the bottom of each list are easier to find, but you may get tired after tasting 6 glasses of the same cheap Aldi Merlot and Cab Sav!)
Red Varietals:
Nebbiolo - extra points if you find this, try Ocado or wine merchant
Cabernet Franc - extra points if you find this, try Majestic or your local wine merchant
Grenache - extra points if you find this, see Ocado 'Yalumba' or Tesco 'Paul Mas Vinus'
Syrah - Tesco, Sainsburys, Waitrose
Sangiovese
Pino Noir
Malbec
Shiraz
Tempranillo
Merlot
Cabernet Sauvignon
White Varietals:
Grüner Veltliner
Gewurztraminer
Viognier
Moscato
Riesling
Sémillon
Chardonnay
Chenin Blanc
Pinot Grigio
Sauvignon Blanc
or if you prefer, here are the sparkling varietals:
Champagne
