Sunday Stroll

This event will be the assessment event for Lee, please support Lee in his effort to become a walk leader for Outdoorlads:

Bramley is a small village, around half way between Basingstoke and Reading - it is the starting point for our linear walk to Basingstoke. The one-pub village sprawls up the hill to it's old centre, built around the church,  Alas, this is a church-free walk, and a the superb Bramley bakery next to the station makes a more than adequate substitution.  We'll start out by heading towards the river.

The River Loddon meanders north from Basingstoke, past several villages and through Stratfield Saye (seat of the Dukes of Wellington) to join the Thames between Reading and Henley. We'll be walking its upper reaches, as it flows through the Hampshire meadows, towards Old Basing. On the outskirts of modern Basingstoke, Old Basing was built around a 12th century fort, though this was replaced by an impressive Tudor house whose ruins stand as testament to the military tactics of Cromwell's army in the English Civil War. We'll walk past the house and near-by Great Barn before our pub stop at Barton's Mill.

The final part of our walk follows the railway into Basingstoke an the end of our walk at the station.

Please being a packed lunch - our stop at the pub will be only enough time for a drink.

As this is a linear walk, and there is very little public parking in Bramley, please park at Basingstoke and get a ticket to the start.  If coming by train from London, use the line out of Waterloo and buy a ticket via Woking to Bramley.
