Summer Night City - Part 1

Make the most of the lighter, warmer evenings and join me for the first in a series of weekday evening strolls through the city and its "green lungs".
From our meeting point at the site of a Roman fort, we will cross the pleasant campus of the University of Birmingham, meander through student suburbia and along the river Rea to reach Cannon Hill Park. The 200+ acre site is home to a host of wildlife in a variety of settings, from formal gardens to nature reserves and woodland. Weather permitting we'll soak up the sun for a while before continuing across Calthorpe Park and back into the city centre.
This is very much a sociable, leisurely walk - there'll be ample time to enjoy our surroundings and a drink in the Gay Village close to New Street station afterwards.
Getting There & Parking
Bear in mind that this is not a circular walk! Trains to University run at least every 10 minutes in both directions. Buses 48, 98 & X64 will also drop you right by our meeting point.
If you are driving there are a number of stations in the West Midlands with free car parks; the closest is at Selly Oak from where a ticket (to New St to cover the longer return leg) will cost you £2.60. Parking at the hospital for the evening will cost you a small fortune and a lot of patience.
What to bring
We'll be walking in parks and on pavements so you'll not need anything special. Trainers or comfortable shoes are fine.
Food & drink
Bring some water to drink, especially if it's a warm evening.
We'll finish up in a bar in the Gay Village with food on offer.
