Northumberland: Valleys, Hills, the Border and a Waterfall

A 10 mile circular walk in a remote and beautiful part of Northumberland National Park. This walk takes in beautiful rounded hills (a hill is often called "Law" in Northumberland), clear bubbling streams (or burns), part of the county's border with Scotland, dense forest and a beautiful waterfall called Davidson's Linn (Linn is a term for waterfall).
Starting from Barrowburn in the Coquet Valley, we will rise up into the hills with fine views (weather permitting) of many of the area's rounded hills and pretty valleys. Many hills in this part of the county were sites for forts built and vanished long ago when Scotland's and England's folk weren't that keen on each other.
We will visit the border fence where we join the Pennine Way for a few miles, taking in the highest point of our walk, Windy Gyle at 619m. From here the views into Scotland are well worth the effort. After passing through a stretch of forest we will arrive at Davidson's Linn which is a beautiful location in a forest clearing. If we are lucky enough to be enjoying a warm May weekend, a paddle in the cool water here would be very welcome.
We return to the Coquet Valley on clear paths, passing through Murder Cleugh!
We can finish off our walk with a visit to a nearby pub for refreshment.

What to bring
Bring waterproofs, good boots, no jeans. Keep an eye on the forecast for what to bring. A spare layer is important for when we stop for breaks. It'll be cooler on the hill tops, of course. Sun cream is a good idea at this time of year, even if cloudy.
Food & drink
Bring packed lunch, water and snacks. There aren't any shops after Rothbury.
