Activities – New Year’s Eve (Monday)
Dan – Short drive to Elterwater – Meet outside the Hostel at 9.30am – We’ll need to car share
7 Mile walk, fairly low level talking in some of the sights around Little Langdale including Cathedral Quarry, Hodge Close, Slater Bridge and a few pubs.
David – Starts as a walk directly from the hostel – Meet outside the Hostel at 8.30am
A more adventurous walk taking in some proper peaks which will still get you back in time for pre drinks! Taking in some of the peaks behind Ambleside including Low Pike, High Pike, Scandale Pass, Red Screes then descends for A BEER AT THE KIRKSTONE PASS INN before returning to Ambleside. The route is 11 miles but can be cut short in case of bad weather.
Douglas – Bike Ride – Meet outside the Hostel at 9.30am

Join us on New Year's Eve for a short cycle in the Southern Lake District, mostly on minor or B-Class roads.
Starting in Ambleside, Our anti-clockwise circular route will take us along the quieter eastern edge of Coniston Water before returning via Grizedale Forest and Hawkshead.
New Year’s Day – Loughrigg & Rydal Walk – 10.45am outside the Hostel
Pretty tame walk over 8miles to try and get rid of the hangover. The walk takes in some famous sights including Loughrigg, Grassmere, and Rydal, with one of my favourite view points Loughrigg Terrace.
This walk - Elterwater, Little Langdale Tarn, Caves, Waterfalls and more!
A fairly easy but very interesting day talking in a lots of sights, starting from Elterwater which we'll need to drive to from the hostel or you'll need to meet at the car park in Elterwater.
Some of the sights we'll see
- Elterwater lovely little village
- Little Langdale Tarn
- Slater Bridge
- Cathedral Quarry
- Hodge Close Quarry
- Elter Water
- 3 Pubs ?
Starting from the Ambleside YHA which i'll be staying at on the Sunday night, Monday (NYE) & Tuesday (See other walk) nights so feel free to join me but book early!
I can't think of a better outdoory place to have a few drinks on NYE. If you aren't staying over i'll let you know where in Elterwater we are starting from closer to the time. Remember to use the ODL discount code if your staying in the YHA TRADE2-17 but I'm sure there will be still plenty of other accommodation in the village.
You can make your own food arrangements but i'm sure some people will eat in the hostel or the local pubs. NYE night if your staying i'd suggest we could go to the local bars in the town later on or stay in the hostel bar. I'll let you know times to meet in the evenings etc closer to the time ?
Bring a torch as a few tunnels to look through but also with so much to see we might get back possibly when it's going dark 3/4pm.

What to bring
You'll need a torch as cathedral cave has bits to see but also possible back when it's going dark at 5pm ish.
Water: bring at least two litres in a water bottle, or better still, a hydration bladder
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Day Rucksack: typically 20-30 litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
Waterproof bags: keep spare clothing, electronics and anything else dry even when your rucksack leaks by using Ziploc type food bags or, better still, outdoor activity waterproof bags
Boots: waterproof and breathable hiking boots with good ankle support. Trainers not allowed.
Gaiters: recommended for wet weather or boggy conditions
Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters, and carry a spare, dry pair
Walking Poles: always optional, love them or hate them, but give them a try and decide for yourself
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece)
Trousers: no jeans as they become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and on warm days shorts are OK
Waterproof jacket: essential when hiking in all but the calmest of weather, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry.
Gloves: Windproof, or better still, waterproof gloves are the best choice, bring a spare pair if expecting rain.
Hat or cap: stay warm in winter and shaded in summer
Sunglasses: for any sunny day, even in winter
Sun cream: can be useful even on cloudy and winter days
Snacks: bring biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit for example and put them somewhere easy to get hold of
Lunch: bring a packed lunch unless otherwise stated
Emergency equipment: the walk leader will bring any emergency equipment required for the group, but you are welcome to bring any that you have, such as additional high energy food, a survival bag, a whistle, a medical kit, a torch and something to make fire (either storm proof matches or a firelighter
Map and compass: the walk leader will have these, but if you like map reading or want to develop your skills, bring yours along
Mobile Phone: keep it in a waterproof bag for use in emergencies, and a spare battery/charger is a good idea
Food & drink
You’ll need to bring lunch with you and snacks to keep the energy up. Don't forget to eat breakfast!! :)
Make sure you have plenty of water & fluids. A flask of something hot is always good on a cold day.
