This is a circular walk of approx 12.2 miles (19.6km) staring and finishing at Hockley Train station that initially makes its way north and then follows the River Crouch eastward before climbing to the village of Canewdon. It then follows the Roach Valley Way back to Hockley via Ashingdon.Canewdon is situated on one of the highest hills of the Essex coastline from which St. Nicholas church affords wide views of the Crouch estuary. At Canewdon there is a former WWII radar station and pillboxes. We may stop at the Anchor in Canewdon for a quick drink as part of the route as well, but please bring suitable food supplies or a packed lunch .

There are numerous legends of witches and ghosts at Canewdon, with one late 19thC resident having called witches for a meet near St. Nicholas church with a wooden whistle! Perhaps she just wanted them to use their brooms to sweep her floor??

We look forward to welcoming you on this walk and if you have any questions please do contact Neil Sharp (Sharpie) and I'll be glad to help.
