The Hidden Lake District Climbing and Camping Weekend
9 people attending
0 places left
We're back in one of the most idyllic and isolated camping locations in Cumbria, we call it The Hidden Lakes and its exactly as you expect. This isnt Ambleside, Windermere or even Coniston (although Coniston is just over the nearby mountain!!!).......this is the Duddon Valley, with its river rising at the head of the valley between Langdale and Eskdale, flowing past the likes of Harter Fell, Hardknott (site of a Roman fort) and the beginings of the Scafell massif.
There is a Sister Event Running alongside this, with walking options available. With 40 places already booked, it should make for a fairly larg-ish group overall.
PLEASE NOTE: This event page is for Climbing option only! Please see the other event page for the walking option.
Climbing:
This event is suitable for those who have climbed outdoors before (preferably with ODL) and wish to develop their skills & experience. It will be a good opportunity for single pitch climbers to try multi-pitch routes.
Although there are ten places available for now, availability may depend on the number of lead climbers available. Places for 'seconders' will be on a first come first serve basis. If there is manageable demand, we may be able to increase numbers.
Itinerary
Friday Evening/Night: Arrival of all members, set up and familiarise with the campsite and facilities. A briefing will occur around 10.00pm or once all members have arrived (if earlier). The climbers will have a short mini-briefing following to agree our plans for Saturday & Sundays climbing.
Saturday: Arise and make your breakfast, then head out to a nearby crag for the day. We will return to the campsite around tea time, with free time that evening to mix with the rest of the group, possibly at the nearby Pub.
Sunday: Arise and make your breakfast, we will then clear our camping pitches and then head out to climb before our journies home later that day.
What to bring
Harness, Rock boots, Belay plate and Screw gate karabiner, and a Helmet.
Climbing rack/gear if you have it.
A waterproof, and some warm layers in case the weather is not what we hope for...it is the Lakes!
If you don't have your own equipment then you may be able to use the OutdoorLads gear if you message the meet leader in advance. Please note there are limited group helmets available, and you wont be able to climb without one; rock boots are also essential for this event- no trainers sorry! Group gear is first come first serve!
Insect repellent is advisable to those susceptable to midges.
Sun screen is advisable, but best applied before leaving camp so hands can be washed afterwards. Otherwise you will have greasy hands all day which will not help your climbing!
Food & drink
You will need to be self sufficient for your catering needs - but there is a great pub nearby that serves food until 8.30pm. But why not think about cooking on site - if the weather is good - a BBQ is always an option (so long as its off the grass).
There is a small local shop in Ulpha that stocks basic groceries, otherwise Broughton in Furness is your nearest place for food supplies, so be sure you have everything you need.
Please note: You will need a packed lunch and drinks for the day for the Sat & Sun if climbing, as we will be at the crag all day.
