Where are we going?
We'll go for a sub-20 mile ride through Hamsterley Forest's famous red and black Mtb trails. If you want to follow along on the official map of trails, click here. Starting from the main car park, we'll head west to do a couple of red trails in succession, namely Poulty's Last Blast → K-Line → Transmission → Accelerator → Nitrous. Red trails are ideal to warm up with, and everybody can take them at their own pace.
Afterwards we're planning to go over to the black trails Pike's Teeth → Root 666 → Odd Sox, followed by a little break. Black trails feature some gnarly bits and small drops, but they always also offer a 'chicken run' if you don't feel like pushing it that day. These trails will reward you with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. After lunch we'll have to climb up to the Descend Bike Park (we're not going in ?) to do Section 13 → Bone Shaker → Special K → Brain Freeze which are mixed black and red.
Finally, we'll be back in the car park some 3.5-4.5 hours later. There is a café at the car park that we could turn in, however I found this to be closed in the past due to the pandemic.
Is this for me?
Trail centers are generally pretty safe for a first ride on a Mountain Bike. The trails are well kept and are checked to be safe regardless of weather. So if you fancy giving it a go, this could be your chance. You would require a well-maintained, high quality mountain bike that should offer at least suspension on the front. Not sure if you should sign up? Just have a chat with the event leader.
