Ever wanted to walk across Morecambe Bay - I mean actually walking out into the bay, across the sand and almost out to sea?
Sounds mad doesn’t it. But it’s possible, under the watchful eye of Michael Wilson, the official Kings Guide to the Sands. A role dating back to 1548 would you believe.
We will be walking from Arnside across to Grange over Sands with about 5-600 other people as part of Save Grange Lido’s fundraiser. This is a fantastic local project aiming to restore and reopen the lido on the promenade. So all monies raised from the entry and other sponsorship will go to the charitable trust managing the restoration and not OutdoorLads (just for clarity).
The actual length of the walk varies from 8 miles depending on the route Michael takes on the day through the channels (and around any quicksand obviously - which is why he's the King’s guide!).
During the walk we will start on dry land and then after a couple of miles we head out onto the sandbanks - at this point you are welcome to take your shoes off if you wish. It’s a lovely feeling. After an hour or so we will cross the River Kent which runs in the middle of the channel - this is all very well controlled and the water usually gets up to your knees on a good day so shorts are a wise idea.
Now you don’t need to do sponsorship if you don’t want to, you just pay the entry fee of £15 per person and you are welcome to raise more if you wish but that’s entirely optional.
Entry Fee - IMPORTANT
To take part in this event you MUST register and pay with Save Grange Lido on the following the link below:
https://www.savegrangelido.co.uk/cross-bay-walk/
Please only book on this event once you have paid your entry fee on the above page. If you turn up without doing so, you will not be able to take part, sorry.
Dogs - The event is suitable for dogs so long as they don’t mind water. You will just need to pay the extra £3 per dog payable on the above website.
Photos - All photos taken by event leader Maddog, on previous events and permission is granted thereby for their use.
IMPORTANT! - Participation Statement
You MUST complete a Participation Statement, in addition to booking your event space before attending an OutdoorLads event. You only need to complete this Participation Statement once, not for each event you attend.

What to bring
You will need to wear old footwear such as trainers or gardening shoes you don't care about. Wellies are OK but can fill up with water! Once we're out on to the sand you can you can whip your footwear off and go barefoot. We'd also recommend some light waterproofs.
You will be walking on a route that is well planned and Michael Wilson, the King’s Guide will be leading the walk. There will be a couple of channels to cross and you may get wet up to your knees (or higher depending on how tall you are!), so shorts might be a good idea depending on the weather. At the Kents bank end there are a number of gullies to clamber through. When the sun does come out there’s no shade, so a hat and sun cream is a good idea.
Food & drink
There are plenty of cafes and shops around the promenade in Arnside so why not come along early and have lunch. Once the walk starts there are obviously no facilities of any kind in the bay itself so you'll need to bring plenty to drink and snacks to last you until you get back.
