Join us for a full day of outdoor (Sport) climbing as part of this year’s Big Spring Camp.

For this year’s Big Spring Camp we are providing two days of outdoor climbing, aimed at differing abilities, as well as a mobile climbing wall within the camp site.

On the Saturday we will run a day of Sport Climbing on one of the many crags within a short drive of the camp site, with 2-3 leaders on hand to guide you if this is your first time climbing outdoors. The precise nature of the day will depend on the number of members who sign up, their previous experience and the weather on the day,

Sport climbing uses permanent anchors fixed into the rock for protection (as opposed to Trad climbing where removable protection is used). If you've learnt to climb routes indoors, sport climbing can be a logical first step into the exciting world of outdoor climbing. As a form of climbing it is more common around the world, but is limited here in the UK, however North Wales is regarded as one of the best areas, with numerous crags providing sports climbing for all abilities of climber!

This event is aimed at climbers with who have climbed recently (indoors or out), although we will try to cater for less experienced climbers too depending on the availability of leaders and the experience of other climbers. At the very least you must have some recent indoor climbing experience (ideally with OutdoorLads) and be able to put on your own climbing harness and competently tie a “figure-of-eight” knot.

Participation statement

As a BMC Affiliate member, Outdoorlads draws your attention to the fact that climbing is an activity with a danger of personal injury or death. You should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for your own actions and involvement.

Please note that every person participating should be aware of (and accept) that those members perceived as ‘in charge’ or leading the event are not necessarily qualified, do not need to be qualified, and are not regarded by OutdoorLads, or themselves as ‘technical experts’ but are amateur climbers with some experience and who are happy to impart their knowledge.  Any advice given should be considered with this in mind by the recipient.

Members should also understand that rock climbing is weather dependant – more so than some other outdoor activities (not least as it can be dangerous to climb on wet rock). Whilst we will do everything reasonably possible to run the event as described, the event leader may need to change the location and/or other event details to best suit the anticipated weather. We will advise members booked on, or interested, in the event of this as soon as is practical, but you should understood that in certain circumstances it may be necessary to move the event to an indoor climbing centre, or cancel the event all together.
