BSC2018 Llyn Dinas and Cwm Bychan from Beddgelert - Sunday 9am Meeting Point A
10 people attending
20 places left
The village of Beddgelert occupies a stunning location at the junction of the Glaslyn and Colwyn rivers. This walk is one the best of its type in the Snowdonia National Park and includes a mixture of mountain and valley walking.
Starting in the picturesque village of Beddgelert, the walk follows the River Glaslyn, climbs up through Cwm Bychan, with remnants of it mining past, before descending to Llyn Dinas and returning, along the Glaslyn, to Beddgelert.
The walk passes ‘Gelert’s Grave’ where, according to legend, Prince Llywelyn’s faithful hound Gelert is buried, and from which Beddgelert took its name. SWe'll make a short side trip to check out the monument.
The majority of the route is over decent paths, except the relatively short climb to the top of Moel y Dyniewyd.

What to bring
Although spring, the weather may still be unpredictable. Please ensure you have adequate layers to keep warm and waterproofs to keep you dry.
The majority of the route is over decent paths, but the route goes across some open land and the path follows a stream at one stage, and it may be a little wet and muddy underfoot, so decent walking boots and gaiters are recommended.
ODL standard kit list recommendations for Day Walks:
Water: bring at least 1-2 litres.
Backpack: 20-30 litres - big enough carry your water, lunch, dry gloves etc.
Footwear: Good walking boots and gaiters are recommended.
Boots: waterproof and breathable and designed for hiking, trainers may be OK on good paths if the ground is dry and there’s little chance of rain.
Gaiters: recommended for wet weather or boggy and muddy conditions and walking in fields.
Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters.
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid-layer (a micro fleece or shirt). In in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece) that can be worn under the waterproof jacket.
Waterproof jacket: breathable fabrics like Gortex are more comfortable and a jacket with a hood is preferable.
Walking Trousers / Shorts: ideally breathable tech fabrics – they are more comfortable and quicker to dry. Jeans become heavy and cold in the rain and are generally not suitable. On warm days shorts are OK but go for a tech fabric that will dry quickly, rather than cotton or denim shorts.
Waterproof trousers: waterproof over trousers are essential to keep dry and warm in rainy weather. Ideally, they can be put on taken off over your boots.
Hat: a beanie to stay warm in winter and / or a cap to stay shaded in summer
Gloves: Windproof, or better still, waterproof gloves are the best choice, bring a spare pair if rain is forecast.
Sunglasses: for any sunny day, even in winter
Sun cream: can be useful even on cloudy and winter days
Snacks: bring biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit etc. and put them somewhere easy to get hold of
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Food & drink
Please bring a packed lunch and plenty of water for the day.
There is a great ice cream shop in Beddgelert is you're keen on a cold sweet treat before we head back to the rugby club!
