Newark & Farndon - Day Walk

This walk begins with wonderful views of Newark Castle, bearing the scars of battle the curtain wall along the riverside has small indentations at about head height caused by cannonball fire.
This enticing walk extends along the River Trent, offering a slice of peace and tranquillity, and delivering many tempting diversions along the way. If you like boats, then you’re in for a treat! Farndon Marina is, without doubt, one of the most picturesque settings on the River Trent and attracts visitors and boating enthusiasts from all over the United Kingdom. It is fascinating watching the boats cruising along the river, and this walk offers the opportunity to do just that!
After Farndon we'll see Sconce and Devon Park, which is not only steeped in history from bloodshed and dueling, but is one of the best surviving examples of 17th century military engineering in Britain. During the First Civil War it was the Royalist stronghold for the town and during the 20th century the park was home to soldiers in the First and Second World Wars.
The return has some gentle bridleways and more beautiful walking along the banks of the mighty River Trent; which was instrumental to the industrial growth and expansion of the town. Newark once an important inland port - ironworks, engineering, brewing and well-known in the sugar industry - the riverside buildings are a reminder of that bygone era.

What to bring
I always prefer comfortable hiking boots, but you might get away with a pair of good trainers on this walk. The terrain might be muddy in places, so at least wear footwear that provides enough grip.
Of course, dress for the weather, layers is better (fleece and separate waterproof overcoat) and will allow you to more easily regulate your temperature. If we get lucky with the weather please ensure you pack your sunglasses and sunscreen, it might also be the perfect opportunity to show us your legs.
Food & drink
Feel free to bring a packed lunch, but we will allow plenty of time to get lunch in Farndon, either the Farndon Ferry or The Riverside
At the end of the walk there will be opportunity to explore Newark Castle and the Town Centre if you wish, where there's more food and drink options.
If you decide not to bring packed lunch, you should still bring along enough fluids and any snacks you think you'll need for the walk itself.
