This walk takes in the Nine Stones Close Stone Circle, also known as the Grey Ladies, which lies on Harthill moor, north of the village of Elton in Derbyshire. They can be seen from the road from Elton to Alport. The stones of this circle are the tallest standing stones in Derbyshire though only four stones remain of what once was a 45-foot circle of stones. They range from 1.2m to 2.1m in height, this tallest being located at the southern end of the circle. Excavations took place in 1847 and the stones may not be in their original positions. A good view of the stones can be had from Robin Hood's stride which is also a great spot for our group photo if you dont mind a bit of scrambling!
There is lots more to discover on this beautifull scenic walk - including a woodland full of Bluebells!
And, if you are staying in the local area or you are not in a hurry to go home, afterwards we may pay a short visit to the most important prehistoric site of the East Midlands, Arbor Low. This is a Neolithic Limestone Henge Monument atmospherically set amid high moorland and just a short 8 minutes drive away. The entrance fee is £1. A perfect place to round off the two days of stone circles! (as seen in the final picture)
