Using a contour only map to navigate over complex mountainous terrain.

Are you on the pathway to becoming a mountain leader or do you just want to be a better map reader? Then this day could be just for you*.

Using a contour only maps is a great way of honing your navigation skills.

Stripping back the map to a 'less busy' state means your interpretation of the contour relief and relating this to the ground around you is key to your success. 

Our day will comprise day of you leading micro navigation legs over complex mountainous terrain (on and off-path) in the Crimpiau near Capel Curig.

The skills will be looking at during the day will be:

  • Setting the map
  • Identifying contour features
  • Unstanding the complexity of contour relief.
  • Visualising vs interperating
  • How to use aspect of slope
  • Navigation using map only
  • Relocation

*this event is ideally suited for those who have already completed ML/HML/NNAS Silver training or similar navigational training. It is not suitable for those new to map reading
