Metroland - A manor, a country house, a river and a pub
15 people attending
0 places left
14km / 9mile circular route with a total ascent of 215m.
We'll see Latimer House, built in 1838, now a De Vere's hotel. It was used during the war for top secret activities by MI5 and MI6, as well as holding captured German U-boat crews who were secretly recorded giving away war secrets.
We'll stop for lunch in the centre of the village of Latimer by a Boar War memorial including a grave of the General's horse.
From there we'll walk through some of the Chess Valley, eventually crossing the River Chess, one of only ~200ish chalk stream rivers globally (the number is continually revised and appears to be a source of contention), and used commercially today for nearby watercress farms.
We'll stop at one of two pubs in the village of Chenies for one or two pints.
Finally we'll walk past Chenies Manor, a grade 1 listed Tudor manor house before walking back to starting point.

What to bring
Hand sanitiser and a face covering: whilst we are living with Covid-19, please bring your own to events to help keep everyone safe
Water: bring at least two litres
Medicines: if you have hay fever, diabetes, minor ailments etc.
Day rucksack: typically 20-30 litres, they are comfortable to wear and allow you to use your arms freely
Boots: waterproof and breathable and designed for hiking, trainers are OK if the ground is dry and there’s little chance of rain
Gaiters: recommended for wet weather or boggy conditions
Socks: proper walking socks will keep your feet dry and help prevent blisters
Layered clothing: lets you quickly adapt to changes in the weather and body temperature. Go for a base layer (vest or t-shirt) and a mid layer (a micro fleece or shirt) and in cooler weather add an outer layer (a windproof jacket or thick fleece)
Trousers: ideally no jeans as they become heavy and cold in the rain, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry and on warm days shorts are OK
Waterproof jacket: essential when hiking in all but the calmest of weather, breathable fabrics are more comfortable and dry
Gloves: Windproof, or better still, waterproof gloves are the best choice, bring a spare pair if expecting rain
Hat or cap: stay warm in winter and shaded in summer
Sunglasses: for any sunny day, even in winter
Sun cream: can be useful even on cloudy and winter days
Snacks: bring biscuits, energy bars, gels, bananas, chocolate or dried fruit for example and put them somewhere easy to get hold of
Food & drink
Bring water and lunch. There's nowhere to buy food. Although we will be stopping at a pub for a drink it will be after lunch.
