City centre pathways

In 2003, a Heritage Trail was commissioned for Europride, funded by The Heritage Lottery Fund, to provide a better understanding of the city’s gay rights movement. The trail featured street mosaics designed by artist Mark Kennedy, unlocking many examples of queer life to remember, reflect on and celebrate. Some of these tiles still exist across the city.

It’s a journey through iconic monuments, touching memorials, secret street art and legendary pubs to tell the story of how Manchester got so Queer.

We will share stories of Manchester’s LGBT+ heroes of both the past and the present - from underground Victorian drag balls to iconic filming locations  through to serial killer conspiracies.

*Although the tone of the walk is mainly humorous, it does involve discussions of hate crime, sex work and historic persecution.

The walk is largely flat and accessible, covering around 6 miles of the City Centre.

At the end of the walk there will be the opportunity for a late pub lunch and drinks along Canal Street
