THE CHALLENGE: 1000m ascent 17.5km in 6 hours - have you got what it takes?

The Malvern Hills Challenge is to walk the entire length of the ridge in one go, taking all the tops along the route. This adds up to over 1000 metres of ascent, equivalent to walking up Snowdon and a bit more. Taking top after top, you will feel it on your legs and you’ll need plenty of stamina to complete this one! The views along the way are outstanding and the reward of completing greatly satisfying.

The challenge, with variations, is an elite event as well as an annual charity walk. Some athletes even take it both ways with a double-ender. Our walk is a standalone Outdoorlads event, one way, following the longest and most challenging route. There are a few steep slopes but most paths are good. There are a couple of toilet blocks where we cross the main roads but nothing on the tops.

This is a linear walk. We will share lifts in two cars to the start of the walk, at Chase End, and walk back to Great Malverns.

The Malvern Hills are an outstanding for their natural beauty, and home to the famous spring water. Iron Age earthworks can clearly be seen on the tops. Legend has it that the giants of Hereford and Worcester faced off on their respective beacons, two of the highest Malvern tops. The views from the top reach from Wales in the West, right across the Midlands, spanning over 100 miles.

As far as hill walks go, they are not quite as high. To enjoy this challenge, you should have some recent hill-walking experience to prepare your leg muscles, and reasonable fitness. Attending an Outdoorlads hill walk with 400-500m ascent or equivalent would be good preparation.
