An evening walk along the old Balerno railway
Long before the phrase Active Travel entered government lexicon Lothian Regional Council started buying old railway trackbeds from British Rail, as BR went about removing the railway network in the 70s and 80s that had existed across the north of Edinburgh. This foresightedness has left a legacy of a network of popular paths crossing the city.
This linear walk follows the Balerno loop from Currie into Edinburgh. We start from Curriehill station and drop down through Currie to cross the Water of Leith and pick up the old railway line just east of the former station location. Apart from a small detour where the city bypass crosses the route and has changed the landscape, we are on a surfaced route of the railway which is largely on a downhill gradient until it reaches the existing railway between Kingsknowe and Slateford. The remainder of the walk into the west end of Edinburgh is on the Union Canal towpath to Lochrin Basin.
