As an important contributor to the pop art movement of the 1960s, he is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century.
We leave Berwick heading east to Selmeston where we cross the A27 and continue on to Charleston house. Approximately 2 miles from Berwick.
Here we will stop for 45 mins - one hour to visit the exhibition. Those that do not want to attend the exhibition can visit the cafe or house (for a fee).
The cost of entry to the exhibition is £10 (£8 Green concession)
Excerpt from Charleston House website:
Experience rarely-seen early drawings by one of the most popular and recognisable artists of our time, David Hockney
From a box of matches on a table to bunches of spring onions and leeks, David Hockney’s works exemplify his ability to find beauty in the more intimate and seemingly ordinary aspects of life, encapsulating Hockney’s love for life and his profound connection with the world around him. Made over sixty years ago, these drawings still resonate with the way of life established at Charleston, in which art and experimental thinking are at the centre of everyday life.

After the visiting the exhibition we press on from the house heading east, past Firle we turn north and start to make our first ascent of the day. Climbing up on to the south downs we will stop at mount Caburn to admire breathtaking views. From there we pick back up the path to Lewes arriving at Cliffe high street.
Here the walk will end and the visit to the pub will start if you care to join us, if not Lewes Station is a 5 min walk away.
