Indoor climbing in Sheffield - LGBTQIA+ night
6 people attending
6 places left
This ODL event is timed to coincide with the climbing centre's monthly LGBTQ climbing night. It will follow the same format as other ODL climbing events in Sheffield, except for the fact that in this particular case the climbing will be overseen by centre staff, who will be on hand all evening to provide expert instruction to attendees of all levels of experience, alongside the usual informal help and guidance provided by the ODL event leader and co-leader. Join us from 6pm for a social meet-up, followed by the climbing.
The cost is the standard entry fee to the climbing centre, which you pay on arrival. Mention that you're with ODL when you pay and you should receive a small discount. You will need to register online beforehand if you have not climbed at this centre before.
You will need to be signed off as a competent climber by climbing centre staff if you wish to climb without the supervision of another competent climber. In order to be signed off as competent you will need to be able to demonstrate that you can:
- fit a climbing harness correctly
- tie the rope on to your harness using the correct knot
- belay another climber correctly and confidently
What if I'm new to climbing, or not yet ready to be signed off as a competent climber? New and inexperienced climbers are more than welcome so please don't be put off if you don't feel ready to be signed off as competent to climb without supervision. If you're new to climbing or you're just not ready to be signed off yet, you'll be signed in by the event leader or co-leader. Expert instruction will be available from centre staff, alongside more informal help and guidance from the event leader and co-leader. This will help you get to the point at which you're ready to be signed off as competent to climb. This makes the event a great way for people to learn how to enjoy the sport safely in a friendly group environment, regardless of whether they have any previous experience.
If you think you need to be supervised, please message the event leader before you sign up to this event. This is so that we can ensure the number of climbers requiring supervision is kept to a manageable, safe level. The centre only allows each competent climber to sign in two novice (i.e. not competent) climbers and it will be the event leader and co-leader who sign in and supervise novice climbers.
So...a bit about climbing
Climbing is a total body workout. It is not just about strength, but requires balance, problem solving and planning. Climbing routes are like puzzles that might need some breaking down, planning or practice. Indoor climbing centres offer the challenges of climbing that you'll find on natural rock crags - simply indoors! It's a fun way to stay fit, make new friends and develop your climbing skills.
What other Climbing events do OutdoorLads Run? We run regular indoor climbing and bouldering events across the UK. We are always keen to put more on, so if you fancy climbing in your local area contact a climbing leader and we can see what we can arrange.
IMPORTANT! - Participation Statement
You MUST complete a Participation Statement, in addition to booking your event space before attending an OutdoorLads event. You only need to complete this Participation Statement once, not for each event you attend.
Please note that every person participating should be aware of (and accept) that those members perceived as ‘in charge’ or leading the event are not experts, do not need to be experts, and are not regarded by OutdoorLads, or themselves as experts, but are amateurs with some experience in the event type and who are happy to impart their knowledge. Any advice given should be considered with this in mind by the recipient.
By signing up to and attending an OutdoorLads event, you are confirming that you have read, understood and accept the content of this statement.
Please see our website for more information including an FAQ about our events.
What to bring
Climbing Equipment: If you have your own climbing gear (harness, shoes, chalk, Belay device & screw-gate karabiner, climbing rope etc.) you can bring this along, but please make sure it is in good condition. As a minimum you will need the use of a climbing harness and a belay device (plate & screw-gate karabiner, or assisted breaking device if you have one). If you do not have your own, you will be able to hire what you need directly from the centre.
Lockers are available at the centre, although you will need to provide your own padlock.
What to Wear: It is best to wear shorts, hiking trousers, combats or tracksuit bottoms. No jeans or any form of trouser which hampers movement. A t-shirt or vest is also suitable. If you have any OutdoorLads branded clothing then please try and wear this as it will give the group a good level of visibility. Any jewellery such as rings, watches, chains or bangles should be removed before beginning the session to prevent injury.
Food & drink
The climbing centre sells a selection of snacks, cakes, hot & cold drinks and pizzas. We may have a short break half way through the evening.
